Canada is the best country in the G7 in broad categories related to quality of life according to a new global comparative index published by Washington-based non-profit The Social Progress Imperative.

Of the 54 categories that comprise the index, Canada scored top spots in 13 categories, including ‘Access to Advanced Education’, ‘Health and Wellness’, ‘Access to Basic Knowledge’ and ‘Personal Safety.’

The Social Progress Index, which ranks 132 countries based on social and environmental factors, is designed as a complement index to GDP and other economic indicators by providing a more holistic understanding of the overall performance of countries.

The new ranking reinforces Canada’s status as a top investment destination for foreign companies, as previously noted by The Economist Intelligence Unit, which rated Canada as the best country in the G7 to do business for 2013 through 2018.

The Social Progress Index is a collaboration with Harvard Business School, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and corporate and philanthropic partners, including the Skoll Foundation, Cisco and Deloitte.
